the Cilantro Twist
Many years ago I was at a friend’s place for dinner. The meal was some kind of chicken chimichanga thing with corn and cilantro and stuff. I enjoyed the first few bites, but was bothered by an aftertaste which I began to realize was the cilantro. It bothered me so much I couldn’t finish the meal and had to apologize but I was “slightly allergic” to cilantro.
A few years later I began getting into Indian cooking, in which cilantro is used quite regularly. I absolutely loved the Indian food, but I still really wasn’t enjoying the cilantro flavour, so I decided I would try to get over my aversion to cilantro.
I had recently begun to develop a taste for peas, which I had always hated as a child, so I thought I might be able to train myself to like cilantro too. I picked up a bunch of fresh cilantro from the grocery store, then I basically just ate some, paying attention to the unique flavour . It was the weirdest thing! I liked it immediately!
The difference was my intent. Simply by making a conscious decision to enjoy the experience of eating cilantro, I was quickly able to recognize the virtues of this wonderful herb, which I now absolutely love and use liberally in my cooking. Do you have aversions, dislikes, or even fears which are limiting your life? Maybe they’re just limiting your menu, or maybe they’re and standing in the way of your goals, dreams, or Purpose. Try giving those aversions the cilantro twist!
