Engagement
By the end of the Alignment stage, we have an idea of how we would like to proceed, what results we would like to see, and what success might look like. The assessment step allows us to define our purpose, values, goals, attitudes and intent. The alignment step helps us figure how to get all these values, goals, attitudes, and intent to work together in harmony with our Purpose.
Now it’s time for the rubber to meet the road.
It’s time to remember the immortal words of the famous Nike Shoes ad campaign- “JUST DO IT!”
Engagement is Purposeful Intentional Action
Engagement requires Disciplined Prioritized Power
Take a minute and read those last two lines again – really slowly, thinking about the implications of each word...
As you can see, Engagement causes Action, leading to a Result. But this action does not take place in isolation; it requires empowerment by unifying intention, prioritization, and discipline. Furthermore, these three abilities are motivated by a clear sense of purpose. Effective Engagement, then, depends on Intention and Priorities which are fully aligned with Purpose. In other words, if we are seeking a particular result (a goal), our ability to effectively achieve the desired result (success) is strongly tied to our understanding of our Purpose. A misalignment between Purpose and Intention or Purpose and Prioritization directly diminishes our Power to succeed.
Prioritization allows us to decide how to spend our limited energy, time, and resources. Intention without Prioritization is weak and ineffectual. This is the watered down version of intention. Perhaps you have heard the phrase “the road to hell is paved with good intentions”. These are intentions without Power. Intention has no power when it is misaligned with Purpose or when it lacks Prioritization.
Notice also the link between Prioritization and Discipline. Prioritizing our Intention takes great discipline. We may not be accustomed to discipline; our “discipline muscles” may have atrophied through years of underutilization. We may need to build up our discipline strength. This itself will require Prioritized Engagement.
