Part 3 in the series Was Jesus Effective?

Was Jesus characterized by awareness? As we have just seen in the preceding article Jesus and Identity, he was certainly aware of himself and had a solid concept of his identity. Was he aware of his values and purpose? We shall look at this further in the following sections. Was he aware of his surroundings? There are many instances of stories of Jesus walking through a crowd and suddenly turning his attention toward a particular individual. He seems to have been operating with a finely tuned sense of intuition and keen sense of empathy. A couple of good examples of this are the story of “the Woman at the Well” (the Gospel of John, chapter 4) and “Who Touched My Cloak” (the Gospel of Luke, chapter 8).
