Was Jesus a Success?

There are a lot of different ways to measure success. I want to take a few of them and apply them to Jesus to measure whether he would be considered successful. Sometimes, I’ll include some incompatible perspectives, and let you be the judge as to which are accurate.

Success as measured by Material Assets

Jesus had no money. Jesus had no debt.

Jesus did not own a home, and in fact was homeless or had no fixed address.

Jesus had basically zero possessions.

Jesus did not have two nickels to rub together, was totally broke and dependent on friends for even the most basic necessities such as food and lodging.

Jesus was the heir to a King’s throne.

Success as measured by Quality of Life

Jesus travelled a lot.

Jesus had a few good friends.

Jesus was enlightened.

Jesus had peace and joy.

Jesus was often lonely.

Jesus did not have a girlfriend.

Jesus may have died a 33 year old virgin.

Jesus hung out at the lake with his buddies.

Jesus was probably in pretty good shape.

Jesus didn’t have a lot of worries.

Jesus was famous.

Success as measured by Achievement of Goals

Jesus retired at age 30.

Jesus may have failed as a carpenter.

Jesus was unemployed.

Jesus did not bring peace to the nation of Israel.

Jesus was not crowned King.

Jesus ascended to the throne of Heaven.

Jesus was killed in the prime of his life.

Jesus died for you.

Success as measured by Influence

Dozens of people followed Jesus everywhere he went.

Hundreds of people mobbed Jesus in the streets.

Thousands of people showed up to hear Jesus speak.

Billions of people have read or heard his words.

Jesus has directly and drastically affected the lives of Millions of people.

Success as a successful action

Jesus was an interesting experiment by God.

Jesus was a captivating communication from God.

Jesus was an invitation to God.

Well I guess the question of whether or not Jesus was a Success depends a lot on how we define sucess, and also one which perceptions of Jesus we choose to embrace. OK that was kinda interesting, but what it really does is allow us a nice segue into what I really wanted to discuss in the first place: Was Jesus Effective?
